Why are my brakes spongy and low pedal?
On a journey, sometimes the brakes are fine, other times the pedal sinks with very little braking effect. Brake fluid level is fine, recently serviced, no leaks – independant garage suspects an issue with the brake master cylinder. Any advice appreciated. Just air in the system, give the brakes a little bleed will sort it. I had this problem !

If you are not sure whether this is the air that causing the brake pedal to become soft, the best thing you can do to become certain about the cause is that you pump the brake pedal gently consecutively for a number of times, if you feel, the pedal is becoming firmer then it is sure the air is the real culprit.

The fix: Find and repair the source of the leak and bleed the system. A faulty brake hose can also cause a spongy feel, it’s a lot less likely but I have replaced plenty especially on older cars. The booster applies a vacuum assist to the pedal – a faulty booster will normally manifest itself as non-responsive brakes – not a spongy pedal . If your brakes are spongy usually you have air in the system somewhere.
