That is not the 4×4 encoder. The encoder is on the transfer case and controls the shifting movement. The GM tech might have given you good information, but you replaced a part that has nothing to do with the encoder. That part will not fix the 4wd.

The transfer case encoder motor moves the transfer case selector automatically. In Auto 4WD, it continually moves the input shaft of the transfer case to vary the amount of torque that goes to the front driveshaft. In 4Hi, 4Lo, or Neutral, it just moves to the proper position and locks in place.
Why are there no lights on my 4WD?
2006 silverado 1500. 4×4 would not engage on mine. I would receive service 4wd message on dash and 4wd switch would change light locations randomly. Changed swich and it did not fix the problem.

I know this is an old thread but still very informational. On a 99 silverado 5.3 the switch lights would not come on also it was stuck in 2wd.l I replaced the actuator on the transfer case, checked the 4wd fuse in the cab, replaced the switch and the TCCM. Still no lights and no 4wd.

When do I replace the encoder on my 2002 envoy?
Good Deal. I dropped it off at my local independent shop. They advised that their is a service bulletin that states when the position indicator switch is replaced on a 2002 and only on a 2002 model envoy it has to be reprogramed, which they did.
