Shortly after I did my first oil change I noticed on cold mornings the tap. It’s light and faint enough that unless you’re listening for it you probably won’t hear it – now that I know it’s there however I hear it very clearly.
Why does my lifter make a tapping noise?
A couple weekends ago I finished doing all the regular maintenance and all or most fluids (front/rear differentials, transfer case, transmission, spark plugs, tensioner pully and belt, etc.) So since then I thought I’d try and tackle the tap.

The traditional adjustment on a hydraulic lifter is zero lash, followed by a predetermined amount of turns on the hold-down nut. But not all engines with hydraulic lifters have a preload adjustment. If the rocker arm is stud-mounted, such as on a Chevy, then proper procedure involves attaining zero lash plus the specified amount of preload.
How often should you tighten the valve on a lifter?
Tighten 1/8 to 1/4 turn (Depending on moon phase) This gives a total of 5/8 -3/4 of a turn after reaching zero lash. (I personally prefer 2/3.) A bit more than the 1/2 many people recommend but less than the full turn I’ve seen from GM. Well within the “safe zone” of the lifter travel, IMO. Cardinal was real close to getting it all right.
