What is the NGASR?
The Nurses’ Global Assessment of Suicide Risk (NGASR) is a tool that nurses can utilize to assess for suicide risk in a clinical, inpatient environment. Suicide risk assessment takes a lot of experience and practice, and the NGASR is one tool that can provide assistance while nurses develop these critical skills.

What is mental health risk assessment?
The assessment and management of the risk of a person with a mental illness causing harm to another is an extremely important part of psychiatric practice. A risk assessment should identify key factors that indicate a pattern or that risk is increasing.
What makes a good mental health risk assessment?
A good risk assessment will combine consideration of psychological (e.g. current mental health) and social factors (e.g. relationship problems, employment status) as part of a comprehensive review of the patient5 to capture their care needs and assess their risk of harm to themselves or other people.

During your assessment, you will be asked questions about: Your mental health and your general health. This includes how your mental health problem is making you feel, how you are coping with the symptoms and whether these make it difficult for you to look after yourself properly.

Currently, there are no medications or other treatments that experts know of to relieve anosognosia. However, some hopeful findings suggest it may be treatable in the future. People who lack insight can decide to accept treatment, even if they don’t acknowledge their disease.
Are there other indicators of reliability of the ngasr?
Other indicators of reliability of the NGASR were sufficient, although predictive validity was poor. The NGASR did not outperform other instruments but is easy to use, and may contribute to identification of risk factors, as well as to a more integral assessment of suicide risk.
Where do we use the ngasr in mental health?
We use the NGASR at the mental health hospital where I work and I have always thought that the variable for substance use “History of alcohol and/or alcohol misuse” didn’t make sense.
How are the variables assigned on the ngasr?
Each of the variables identified above for the NGASR are assigned a weighting based on the ones most likely to lead to suicide, with five being assigned a score of 3 (for high-risk) and the others being assigned a score of 1.
What are the psychometric properties of the ngasr?
The study of the psychometric properties of the NGASR showed moderate internal consistency and good content and criterion validity. Content validity, obtained through a panel of experts, was consensual. The NGASR index had good criterion validity, showing strong correlation with the SIQ, BDI and DASS-21 (R = 0.830, p < 0.05).
