How do you tell if you have a stuck lifter?
How do you tell if you have a stuck lifter?
The noise created in your car’s engine is the most obvious symptom of a faulty lifter. The sound of the faulty lifter can be discerned. A faulty lifter will make a sound like a tapping sound, instead of a knock or ping.
What causes a valve lifter to malfunction?
We have found that most lifter faults are caused by oil pressure issues, or control issues. The AFM activation and deactivation is controlled by the Valve Lifter Oil Manifold or VLOM. The VLOM consists of 4 electronically operated solenoids and is bolted to the top of the engine block beneath the intake manifold assembly.
When do you Hear No oil lifter tap?
If your hydraulic lifters are in good shape you will not hear the classic no oil lifter tap until after about 15 to 20 seconds or more of no oil.
Where is the AFM on a GM LS lifter?
To control contamination a small replaceable oil filter is located in the VLOM inlet oil passageway. The AFM oil pressure relief valve regulates the oil supplied to the VLOM and is located in the oil pan near the oil filter housing. The AFM system has an operating range from 27 PSI to 66 PSI of oil pressure.
What should I do if my AFM lifter fails?
Any time an engine has failed AFM lifters the lifter guides must be replaced, the lifter bores must be measured, and the VLOM must also be tested for proper operation, or replaced. In addition the VLOM oil filter must be replaced as well.
Is it possible for oil to leak out of intake manifold?
Assuming this is a V configuration engine then yes. The intake manifold is what brings air to the cylinders. Depending on your engine there may be oil splashing around under the intake manifold, and when the seal or gasket there gets old the oil can leak out. Knowing the year and engine of the vehicle might help.

Is the lifter valley separated from the intake ports?
While small block Chevy was the engine in our case, we’ve seen this same problem with small block Fords as well. This will be true with any engine that has a common area between the lifter valley and the intake ports. Pontiacs or LS engines, for example, will not suffer this problem because the lifter valley is separated from the intake ports.
