Can oil leak from a camshaft sensor?
Can oil leak from a camshaft sensor?
The Camshaft position sensor can leak oil into its electrical connector causing the Check Engine light to illuminate. The engine may also stall intermittently as a result.
Where to find oil leak on cam position sensor?
If the source of the leak was in that area it would have to be tucked away on the right side of the sensor almost under the valve cover in an area with minimal turbulence. Labor calls for 9/10, dealer parts will be $100 and after misc fees im expecting to pay $200.
Where is oil leaking from the crankshaft seal?
Just so we are clear the cam sensor on the left near the water pump outlet is where we see oil as you can see from the video. Its also possible the oil leak from the crankshaft seal is putting out the oil we see spreading accross the timing chain cover. The most significant oil I see in the area of the cam sensor is from below.
Where is the oil leak on a LS1?
Quite normal on an LS1 engine to get a leak from the oil pressure sensor, or less commonly, from the camshaft position sensor, both located at the rear top of the engine. This leak can flow down and look like it’s coming from the engine/bell housing area. The pressure sensor is easy to remove and reseal.
Is it possible for a cam sensor to fail?
Yes they fail, but it is very rare. There is so much more oil behind and around the crankshaft pulley then any other pulley or part for that matter on the front of the engine. The cam sensor oil seems isolated.

How does the front crank seal work on a car?
The front (water pump side) crank seal, only has to deal with the very modest amount of non-pressurized oil being thrown around the drive chains….these are lubed by the splash oil coming back down from the head.
