What is the purpose of a double cardan U-joint?

What is the purpose of a double cardan U-joint?

Double Cardan joints are typically used where operating angles are too large for single cardan joints. A Double Cardan joint is essentially two single Cardan joints connected by a coupling yoke that contains a centreing mechanism.

How do I know if my double Cardan joint is bad?

Clunking under acceleration or sudden braking is often the first sign of DCJ wear, and can presage an immediate and catastrophic failure if left unremedied. This clunking comes from excess bearing play between the DCJ’s individual U-joints and its intermediate shaft, or inside the U-joint caps themselves.

What is a double U-joint called?

Some drivelines use a “double cardan,” or constant velocity (CV), with two joints at one end (typically the transfer case) and a single joint at the other end. The two joints split the angle, allowing for greater angularity.

What kind of joint is double Cardan driveshaft?

Check out our guide here. The double cardan joint that we will be rebuilding in this article is a near constant velocity joint. It is often referred to simply as a CV joint. It is comprised of two u-joints and a centering assembly that enables us to use our driveshafts at the angles necessary for the smooth and proper operation of lifted vehicles.

What should I do if my Cardan driveshaft falls out?

Once the outermost u-joint on the transfer case side is removed the socket yoke should simply fall out. If you are rebuilding the ball centering unit rather than replacing it that there is a small spring located in the ball centering unit that you may need to reuse. Clean and grease parts as necessary prior to reassembly.

How do you disconnect a Cardan front drive?

Disconnect the front driveshaft from the axle. This can be u-joint straps, u-bolts, or a flange set up where all the caps are pressed into solid yokes. If you find that even with the bolts removed you cannot disconnect the driveshaft do not be afraid to employ the use of a hammer or a tool to leverage things apart.

What makes a single cardan shaft constant velocity?

Dana-Spicer put together this excellent YouTube video showing how a single-cardan shaft works. Double Cardan joints are a class of joint which are designed to mostly eliminate the variation in angular velocity that plagues u-joints, thus they’re generally classed as a Constant Velocity.

Where can I buy a double Cardan driveshaft?

Call IRO (or your preferred driveshaft supplier) with the length you measured accurate to within 1/8″ inch. Double cardan driveshafts can be purchased at many different retailers.

What is the operating angle of a double Cardan joint?

Since there are two joints, the operating anglecapacity of the double cardan joint is twice that of a single cardanjoint. These are the type of CV joints most commonly used on driveshafts connecting a transmission or transfer case to a rear or front axle.
