Remove the thermostat, which is clearly visible after removing the housing, and replace it with a new one specified for the 350 engine. Check with your automotive supplier to ensure you have the proper thermostat. Replace the thermostat housing and tighten the two bolts in a clockwise direction.
Can a thermostat be installed in the wrong direction?
Answer: A thermostat installed backward will cause the engine to overheat quickly, similar to a thermostat being “stuck closed.” Therefore, always double check that the thermostat is installed in the correct direction, and if equipped with a jiggle valve you install it according to the Factory Service Manual.

What should the thermostat be on a 305 Chevy?
You got a leaky spark tube… That 305 running at 215 is too hot. I’ll assume that engine originally came with a thermostat around 180 degrees. If the engine has a shrouded mechanical fan then it shouldnt run too much hotter than that. Maybe 185-195.
