There is a casting number on the housing of the gearbox (either 83 or 84). Casting number 83 is a “small bore” GMT400. Casting number 84 is a “big bore” GMT800.

Can a flathead steering Shim be removed completely?

The housing cover should not be removed completely because there is danger of the bearings falling out of place. The shims can be pulled out one at a time after the housing cover screws have been loosened enough to drop the cover 1/8″.
