The ED is not equipped with an engine/exhaust brake. Period. Selecting a lower gear on a downhill grade is pointless if a CI engine is not equipped with such.

The reason I say that is I have monitored the turbo position while driving with it off and on and even with the exhaust brake off the turbo veins still move the full range of motion during normal driving. The exhaust brake will close the veins all the way more often but they still do close even with it off.

As an aside, there was a review somewhere (pickuptrucks.com?) that tested loaded RAM Cummins (and other HD diesels) down long grades out West. They claimed that Auto EB required fewer brake applications than Full EB using T/H downhill. Have heard others confirm this as well.
Why do you need exhaust brake on Cummins diesel?
It helps work the vanes in your turbo which can prevent them from being clogged up. Plus it sounds cool and makes your brakes last a little longer so why not Use it use it use it. The more it is used the less likely of a soot buildup issue.
