What is ASTM E208?
What is ASTM E208?
The ASTM E208 drop weight test is used to determine the nil-ductility transition (NDT) temperature of ferritic steels 5/8 inch thick (15.9 mm) and over. Once a brittle failure begins the crack will continue to grow until it runs out of material, the pressure is released or it encounters steel that is more ductile.
What is nil-ductility?
The nil-ductility temperature (NDT) is defined as the on-heating temperature where ductility is reduced to zero (4). Essentially, this can be viewed as the temperature of liquation onset, where grain boundary surfaces are coated by a thin continuous liquid film (59).
What is drop weight testing?
The drop weight test is a mechanical test, in which a defined weight falls onto a specimen from a specified height. Following the drop weight test the appearance of the fracture surfaces is evaluated. Here the proportions of the deformation fracture surface and brittle fracture surface are determined visually.
What is drop impact test?
A drop test, or free fall test, simulates vertical and rotational impacts that can put goods at risk in the context of a distribution cycle, mainly during handling and storage. The drop impact test is performed in a laboratory context using Drop Tester machines.
Does stainless steel have a Dbtt?
From above graph we can conclude that for Stainless Steels (TP 304 and TP 316), the energy absorbed by specimen is very low between -20°C to -30°C so DBTT is in between -20°C to 30°C.
What is drop test method?
Drop testing is a procedure used to evaluate how a package and its contents react to impacts such as free-falls, tumbles, and other types of handling during the shipping and distribution environment.
Why is drop test important?
Drop Test Purpose Drop testing ensures the product stays in its original condition from manufacturing to implementation. In addition to ensuring that products survive their journey from point A to point B, many products are at risk for being dropped or jarred throughout their lifetime.
Is steel 1018 FCC or BCC?
The annealed 1018 steel samples were composed of iron with 0.18% C, 0.8% Mn, and 0.4% Si and had a BCC crystal structure and ferrite and pearlite microstructure.
Is 316L ductile?
316L austenitic stainless steel, in particular, is considered as one of the most widely used materials today owing to its high corrosion and oxidation resistance and its excellent strength and ductility [13,14].
How do you do a drop test?
Package drop test procedure
- Randomly choose a packaged carton from the available master cartons as a testing sample.
- Find a suitable testing area with a flat and hard floor.
- Drop the carton from the appropriate height 10 times from different sides.
- Open the carton and verify the condition of packaging and products inside.
What type of test is a drop test?
Why is BCC more brittle than FCC?
BCC metals are generally more brittle. The main reason is their dislocation lattice friction stresses are higher than for FCC metals. Thus, dislocations move less readily in BCC lattices, which means less plasticity compared with FCC metals.
