Can I wash my down jacket?

Do NOT use bleach or fabric softener when washing your down jacket. You’ll want to wash your down jacket on the permanent press or gentle cycle on your washing machine and use cold water. It’s best to steer clear from warm water or hot water when washing your jacket.

Does washing a down jacket ruin it?

Most backpackers are afraid to wash down because they think getting down wet will ruin it, but that’s not actually true. But when it’s properly washed and dried, down will fluff up just like new and insulate your body much better. In addition, washing a down coat is super easy.

How do you fluff up a down jacket after washing it?

Adding dryer balls into the dryer stops the feathers from clumping together and helps to re ‘fluff’ the down. To prevent clumps of down forming you can remove the jacket every now and then from the dryer (hold the jacket flat and not at one end) and fluff. Ensure the jacket is 100% dry.
