Sounds like marbles rolling around in the back every time there was slight moisture on the shocks and you were accelerating from a stop, slowing to a stop, or taking a slow corner with some weight shift. Apparently seems like a pretty common issue with these Escapes since 2013, but was covered under warrenty.
