Maybe take you half an hour to an hour (depending on how rusty the old bracket is on the joint), and all you need to do is jack the car up, open the joint, pop the pipe off the rubbers holding it on, then reverse with the new pipe.

I removed some of it, and a kind gentleman pulled more out and thought he got all of it.

They never come out of the exhaust when they fall to bits. What is coming out is the wadding used to pack the exhaust silencer. Doesn’t matter much and probably won’t make much difference to how loud it is and it’ll still pass an MOT if its not leaking or excessively noisy. This discussion has been closed.

For information, the car is a 1989 XR4x4 2.9 EFI, and the back box is actually the newest of the exhaust components. Odd, probably worth taking it back if its less than a year old. It could be coming from a centre box. I’d be cautious of just leaving it, it could block the exhaust, worst case scenario the car won’t run!

Why is hair coming out of my muffler?
The material is the fiberglass baffling material from inside the muffler. It is an early indicator that the muffler is failing. The interior metal frame work is rusting away allowing the packing to escape. The problem will get worse over time. The muffler will at some point begin to get louder.
