Do you use a timing belt or a timing chain?
Do you use a timing belt or a timing chain?
Good on chevy for not using cheap belts! a chain is generally longer lasting, a very good thing on interference fit engines that bend the valves + empty your wallet if it breaks, especially at interstate speeds!!!! How do you set timing on a 2.2L?
I just rebuilt a 2.2l in my employees car. Engine timing marks were on the nose and dialed in for #1 top dead. When we fired up the engine it acts like the timing is advanced a tooth as the motor shudders/shakes heavily while it runs.
What should I do if my Malibu timing chain fails?
Normally these chains will give you warning [noise] should they start fail. There is an upgraded timing chain tensioner applicable to your model of 2.2. If you hear a chain rattle on cold start-up that lasts a few seconds then you might want to consider the upgraded tensioner #12608580.
Why is my GM 2.2 engine not working?
That motor is nothing but cheap gm junk. Actually, you could probably call it gm’s dream motor-cheap to build, not very durable and unbeleiveably expensive to repair. The 2.2 has a timing chain with a tensioner. Could be the tensioner is wore out, but it would be all the time, not just when it is hot.
Does my Malibu have timing belt or a timing chain?
I bought a 2006 Chevy Malibu LT with 2.2L engine over a year ago with 121,000 miles on the odometer. Now I’m coming up on 150,000 and I need to know if it has a timing belt or timing chain so I know how badly it needs to be replaced. Any help would be appreciated
Is there a timing drive replacement for GM Ecotec?

When did GM start using the 2.2 liter engine?
The 2.0 got bumped to 2.2 liters sometime in the late 80’s, and got a pretty big increase in hp, but not torque. It was around this time, I think, that they started using the 2.2 as the base engine in vehicles like the Century, Cutlass Ciera, S-10, etc. FWIW, I have a friend who once owned an ’85 Cavalier with the 2.0.
