hello I have a 2006 Cummins ISM (ESN, 35127420 ) This unit while driving surges with a small puff of black smoke, while watching the EGR data in insite, while at crusing speed arouns 1/2 to 3/4 throttle the EGR delta pressure bounces from about .5 to 4.5 inhg and the EGR cooler efficiency changed to NA.
Is there a phantom problem with ISM Cummins?
Sounds like a short somewhere, a bad ground, crank or cam sensor. The ISM I had would derate itself (no power) I had it in the so call Cummins shop about 8 times, and many dollars later, the driver turned the truck over, I guess thats one way to fix it, unfortunately, I didnt have insurance to cover the damage, truck was totaled.

If you do the update through the data link triangle connector in the engine harness by the Ecm , the chances of this happening are greatly reduced . Also loading the wiring like you stated with a bulb is good but it doesn’t tell if there are wires crossing inside the harness though .

Can a Cummins ECM be damaged by Shorts?
If these problems occur, the damage it can cause in a Cummins ECM is immense. External shorts can damage components and if the voltages in current are high enough, they can damage the circuit board deeming the unit worthless.
