If not, reprogramming or updating the software may not cure a driveability issue or shift complaint (figure 3). Chrysler has taken computer control from a basic, non-intrusive level to a totally invasive level never before attempted by automobile manufacturers.

When to replace your PCM ( and when not to )?

The onboard computer is the brains of the engine control system, so when the brain isn’t functioning correctly neither is the engine or anything else that the microprocessor controls – which may include the charging system, transmission, various emission controls and communications with other onboard control modules.

Do you need to reprogram the computer when installing a new TCM?

When you install a new TCM in these vehicles, it must be programmed with dealer-level equipment or equivalent, and the programming must be performed on the vehicle. What’s more, you should never try to drive the vehicle to the dealership after the repair; it may cause premature transmission failure. You’ll need to have the vehicle towed.

Most of the OBD-II computers have programming update capability. The NAG1 units incorporate a TCM that isn’t programmable, but comes user ready from the dealer (figure 4). Chrysler PCMs can be expensive to replace and require factory level reprogramming, but aren’t known for frequent failures.

For example, the PCM controls the engine, the transmission, the fuel system, and the speedometer. If the vehicle isn’t performing the way it should, the PCM can be reprogrammed to increase performance. Recalls are another reason your PCM may need to be reprogrammed.

Where can I get my GM PCM programmed?

GM technology and software is expensive. If this isn’t a procedure you will do on a regular basis, you can have your PCM programmed at your local dealer or some local part stores. All you need is your VIN, mileage and the PCM that needs programming.

Do you need a computer to program a Jeep Grand Cherokee?

If you find a computer from a vehicle that is the same as yours, engine etc, and the numbers match on the sticker on the computer, then you could use it. Otherwise a computer from the same vehicle but different numbers on the computer would have to be flashed at a Dealership.
