Why is the glow plug on my diesel engine not working?

Why is the glow plug on my diesel engine not working?

It immediately ignites when it encounters the super-heated air and the expanding gases drive the piston down. Since the diesel engine requires super-heated air to ignite the fuel, a problem arises when the engine is cold. When starting a cold engine, it is difficult to super-heat the air when its heat is quickly lost to the cold cylinder head.

Where is the glow plug control module located?

Located on the engine and with a direct connection to the engine control unit, the control module uses a microprocessor to analyse input from the engine control unit to determine information related to the working of the glow plugs.

How can I tell if my glow plugs are working?

If your glow plugs are all working correctly, move onto your glow plug control module. Start by checking the battery voltage to the glow plug control module, a voltage drop of over a half volt (or more) means your control module should be replaced.

Why is my pre glow warning light not working?

If a new glow plug doesn’t remedy the problem, take a look at other parts of the circuit, mainly the timer. The timer’s job is to turn the plugs off once the correct temperature has been reached. A faulty timer may keep the plugs on for too long, wearing them out, or even not turn the plugs on at all.

When does the glow plug indicator light come on?

The system typically makes the driver wait around 10 seconds while the plugs warm up the engine. Once the correct temperature has been achieved, the computer will then let the driver start the engine. Normally, the glow plug indicator light will come on only when the engine is cold.

How to check the glow plug control module?

Check for relay actuation by disconnecting the oil temperature sensor and turning on the key. It will click when activated. Remove the ground on the small relay terminal and jumper it to ground. If it works now there is a problem with the module or PCM Check the glow plugs for an open circuit. Pull the connector off the glow plugs.
