I had done some additional searching and it seems that the flashing defrost light indicates a problem with the controls or blend doors. It does a self test when the doors are unlocked and if it detects a problem it tries to calibrate things. That is why the blend doors are moving.

I just noticed this morning that on a cold start ( -20C ) as soon as I press the unlock button on the remote the rear defrost light start to flash and all the heat and blower controls are locked out. I can hear some of the blend doors moving and after a minute or two everything works and the light goes out.

As far as I can remember our rear defrost light has always flashed when opening a door and some sounds come from under the dash just like you described.
Is the rear defrost indicator light on cold start normal?
I have exactly the same problem now, after disconnecting the battery yesterday. The rear defrost indicator light flashes quickly for about a minute, none of the hvac controls do anything while it is flashing. It stops and everything seems to return to normal. I disconnected the battery to clear an MIL – code 0300.
