Why is the gas gauge not working on my Avalanche?

Gas gauge not working always showing emty speedometer not working correctly sensor light keeps comming on and off. The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500. The contact stated that the speedometer functioned erratically. Most recently, it was stuck at the highest speed.
