Why is my GMC Acadia power lift gate not opening?

The rear (power) lift gate will not open. When the button is pushed the latch will open releasing the door but then it pulls back in and does the the same thing over. When you manually open the gate and push the button to close it the latch starts clicking and then just a whining grinding noise.
