If that spring is broken or weak or its jammed it won’t go into park. OP do you use your parking brake? if not then that is probably why the parking pawl isnt working….had added stress put on it because the parking brake wasnt being used Welcome to FRF, & enjoy!

Welcome to FRF, & enjoy! Seen this happen alot on high millage trucks go under the dash you will see the shift rod on the column. It has 2 bolts in the back of it that the shift cable hooks too the bracket. They come loose and won’t let you put it fully in park. Here is a picture.

The engine still has plenty of power and the automatic transmission shifts well running down the road. However about 1/3 of the time when i put the truck in park the transmission doesn’t go into park. Its as if it slips into neutral but the shift lever is in the park position.
Why is my Ford Ranger stuck in Park?
Either something caused it to bend, or it’s starting to come loose. If it’s come loose, the geometry won’t be right anymore and it may keep your Ranger stuck in park. There aren’t a lot of issues that would cause your Ford Ranger to be stuck in park.

Why is my shift lever not working on my Ford Ranger?
Managed to stop it but injured my knee. Found pin from shifter mechanism on the floor under steering column that had fallen out of shifter. Shifter would not stay in “park” afterwards but kept jumping into “neutral” and “reverse”. Spring tension of the shift indicator would pull it out of “park” as soon as the lever was released.

2001 Ford Ranger–automatic transmission, remove ignition key and it can easily be taken out of park. Key in ignition with engine running, I no longer have to press the brake to get into any gear. I have experienced this same problem in February 2003 when it was repaired by local Ford dealer.

1st post and needing help. 2015 900xp ranger that i’ve owned since new- 2 mornings ago went to start and it fires up then dies right away. will stay running if you hold the gas pedal down while starting but have to keep it revved to stay running.
