Why does my engine run rough when the AC is on?

Why does my engine run rough when the AC is on?

When the engine is put under a load by the AC system, the car’s computer automatically attempts to compensate for that by adjusting the idle. If there is carbon buildup within any part of the system, including the idle air control valve, throttle body, or possibly even the EGR valve, it can cause surging.

What happens to the engine when the a / C is on?

Hard shuttering and engine dies when A/C is on at idle. When the car is idling and the A/C is turned the engine will shutter hard and/or turn off.

Why would the a / C make my car accelerate rough?

I pulled over to a complete stop and turned the A/C off again to see what would happen – smooth acceleration. I then did the same with the A/C on – hesitation.

Why does my a / C compressor not turn on?

Your A/C compressor may be dragging against the belt and requires more energy from the engine to keep the compressor turning, thus the power during acceleration is reduced. If your usual mechanic doesn’t work on air conditioner equipment (some don’t, it requires equipment that can capture refrigerant and such), ask him if he knows someone who does.

When to drop power to the AC compressor?

This is usually done by temporarily dropping power to the AC compressor clutch whenever the throttle is opened to the point of hitting the transmission downshift point for a car equipped with an automatic transmission, or about 60% of full throttle opening on car with a manual transmission.

How does a bad AC compressor affect the engine?

Your car’s ac compressor is a key part of the air conditioning system. If the ac compressor is failing or you have a bad ac compressor, this can negatively affect the engine. The compressor is the air conditioning system’s power unit that puts the refrigerant under the correct amount of pressure before it flows into the condenser mechanism.

Why does my car lose power when the AC is not on?

Open the hood, locate the AC compressor, and disconnect the wiring harness going to the compressor’s clutch. The clutch allows the compressor to be turned by the AC belt. When it’s not energized, the compressor doesn’t turn, so it doesn’t eat engine power.

Why does my car idle when the AC is on?

It also helps increase engine speed when an extra load is placed on the engine, for example, when you turn on the AC or defrost system. However, a faulty or restricted IAC valve may keep the engine idle speed from increasing when it needs to.

Why does car RPM drop when air conditioner is on?

Cars RPM drops when the AC is turned on because the AC compressor has kicked in. After the interior cools off, the compressor will cycle on and off.
