There is NO filter between the tank and the frame rail fuel pump- only a course screen. Got towed and the Ford dealer in Cumberland, Md. found that the wiring harness had chaffed and the glow plug module wiring had shorted and blew F2.22 fuse. Repaired the wires at GPCM (red-ckt and bu/wh-ckt 160 at C1273B). Not sure what all that is but the truck runs like new again after repair.
