Why does my 95 Mustang GT shift erratically?
My 95 mustang gt aode shifts automatically to diffrent gears 2, 1,3 to neutral.. very erratic.. could it be a sensor ? The most likely sensor to fail is the Transmission Range Sensor. This sensor could cause erratic shifting. A bad output shaft speed sensor could also cause erratic shifting, but these rarely fail.

This could be caused by a defective solenoid, wiring problem, or bad processor. If you have had any recent electrical problems one of the above problems is more likely. This same condition could also be caused by a stuck 1-2 shift solenoid in the valve body.

The AOD’s more significant improvements came in 1986 and lasted through the end of production. Ford developed the AODE and 4R70W to achieve cohesive engine and transmission function in 1991. The two most likely possibilities are an overdrive band problem, or a stuck 3-4 shift valve. If the overdrive band is worn, when the transmission shifts into overdrive it will neutral out and start to rev freely, but not accelerate the vehicle. If the servo that applies the band is stuck or has badly damaged seals the symptoms will be the same.
