What makes a clunking sound when shifting into drive?

This sound is NOT made when shifting into Drive, 3, 2, or 1. On a lift at my mechanic, it appears to be coming from the transfer case. There is also some “fluid” on the outside of the case but no apparent drip to leak per say. Any ideas?

They should all be at the top. on the bottom, i belive the inboard pad will hit something. The purpose is just to prevent vibration (squealing), though. The pad wear may be from sticking slide pins. When you do the brakes, pull them out and lube them. Clean the old lube off first if it’s got a kind of gummy consistency.

Can you really hear the transfer case grinding noise?

In the first video, you can really hear it start as soon as I put it in gear (@ 5sec), and then I rev up the engine and let off and can really hear it (@ 30sec) – this is how it sounds running down the highway about 50-60mph. I put it into 4WD (@ 1min) just to verify it’s not just doing it in 2WD and it’s doing it in 4WD as well.
