When to replace piston rings on 350 Chevy?

If your 350 Chevy isn’t performing as is expected of such a high performance auto, chances are that the engine’ piston rings need to be replaced. A pressure test on each cylinder however needs to be done so as to determine which between the valve seal or piston ring is leaking since both interact.

Apply a light coat of new engine oil to the valve stem with your clean index finger and then install the valve seal on the valve stem with your hand. Install the valve spring, then the shield over the spring and finally the spring retainer.

Remove the valve cover using a ratchet, ratchet extension and socket. Attach the socket and ratchet to the ratchet extension. Then position the socket on one of the valve cover mounting bolts and turn the ratchet counterclockwise to remove the bolt. Then proceed with the rest of the mounting bolts.

What kind of valve seals do I need for a Chevy Camaro?

My local machine shop recomends using umbrella type valve seals on the exhaust valves and posi-locks on the intake valves. I’ve always been afraid these seals would starve the guide for oil, especially the posi-locks and get a shorter life out of the guides and valves.
