When did GM change the steering column interchange?

When did GM change the steering column interchange?

Sometime between 1975, and 1977 GM changed the connector. I had this problem when I tried to put a tilt column out of a 1975 in my 1977. I do know that at one time there was an adaptor harness to prevent splicing the harness. If you run in to this problem you can just change out the turn signal switch.

Is the steering column and spline shaft the same?

It appears both are the same style with the spline shaft and the retaining bolt on the side. The only question is that the tilt shaft seems to have 2 more wires coming out of the column to the large electrical plug in connector. Why would the tilt column have two more wires and do we still think the tilt column would be a plug and play install?

Is the steering column the same on a 1978 truck?

OK, here are the two steering columns in question. The one on the left is the original 1976 column while the one on the right is a tilt column from a 1978 truck. It appears both are the same style with the spline shaft and the retaining bolt on the side.

When did the Silverado Sierra change lug patterns?

The HD trucks changed lug patterns in 2011. They used to be the same 8×6.5 that they were for a long time, that was shared by D**** and F***. In 2011 they went to 8x180mm for the single rear wheel trucks and 8x210mm for the dual rear wheel trucks.

When did GM change the steering column mount?

The GM columns are all about the same length so there are many choices. The critical dimension is from the dash mount to the steering wheel mount. The floor mount plate is also different but easy to change. In 1979 GM changed from a splined shaft to a double D.

Which is the correct steering column for swap?

Part of the problem your having is the column you have pictured is not a 71 column, it looks like a 79 and later column. Read the above posts that Philip posted explaining the differences. 70-78= splined shaft, 79-up = double d shaft.

Is the steering column the same shape as the dash?

My install is in a 77 Nova but the columns are all the same shape from 69 – 89 in most GM cars. This is a comparision of the dash mounting brackets. The mount to the column is the same but the brackets can vary.

Where is the nuetral switch on a steering column?

Early ones are clamped on, most later ones are just crimped or spot welded on and are easy to remove. The slot on the column is where the nuetral/back up switch was. The column I used came from a theft recovery car and had a shifter on it. The shifter handle nub was removed and the hole patched.
