Cervical Spine You can easily feel it at the base of your neck, especially when you bend your head forward. Go ahead, see if you can find it. The cervical vertebrae’s main job is to support your head. This is no small feat given that the head can weigh as much as 11 pounds!

How do you palpate C7 spinous process?

Palpate the spine to determine the spinous processes of C7 and mark this point. C7 can be identified by palpating the base of the occiput down into the deep hollow where the next bony prominence felt will be C2, then C3-5 are closely packed and the spine of C6 is very prominent.

Can a soft tissue palpation be performed on cervical spine?

After assessing the curve of the cervical spine, soft tissue palpation can be performed. (Courtesy Joseph E. Muscolino, excerpted from The Muscle and Bone Palpation Manual, with Trigger Points, Referral Patterns, and Stretching, 2ed. Elsevier. 2016). It should be emphasized that there is a science and an art to muscle (myofascial) palpation.

Why is supine palpation of the spinous processes of the neck challenging?

Supine palpation of the spinous processes of the neck. (A) The spinous processes of C3 through C6 are challenging to palpate because of the normal lordotic curve of the neck. (B) All cervical spinous processes are easily palpable because the client’s neck curve is decreased (hypolordotic). Courtesy Joseph E. Muscolino.

What happens when you have a cervical spine fracture?

If the fracture/dislocation is severe, there will be a visible and palpable “step-off”, meaning the bones are not lined up properly which can be seen and felt by the examiner. If the spinal nerves are severely compressed, there may be significant weakness and numbness in the arms and/or legs.

Is the palpation method accurate for identifying C7?

The conventional palpation method, which identifies the most prominent cervical spinous process as the seventh cervical (C7) spinous process is unreliable in many cases. We compared the accuracy of 2 different palpation methods used for identifying C7.
