What is SERV 4WD?
The “Service 4WD System” message does not mean it is time for routine maintenance of the 4WD system; rather, it indicates a problem with the 4WD system that should be properly diagnosed and repaired.
When does service 4WD light come on on Dodge Ram?
The bulletin applies ONLY to vehicles with an electronic transfer case (sales code DH8, DH9 or DK3) built before January 6, 2012 (MDH 0106XX). When the Service 4WD light comes on, it also shuts down the 4WD capability for the remainder of the drive cycle. This is a software issue and can only be corrected by flashing the computer’s memory.

As i pulled out of the driveway my “Serv 4wd” light popped on. I came up to a stop sign and stopped, the light went out. I turned left, traveled about 500′ and the light came back on. for about the next 12 miles. Eventually, it stopped coming on. works. Light on the dash just flashes.

Stopped by the dealer, picked up the actuator i ordered some time back, R&R’d the actuator, about a 5 minute job. Works great. Got 4 low back, it all works the way it should again.

When the service 4wd light was on, the cruise control did not work either. I’ve had mine come on out of no where. ended up being the Transfer Case control module. Had my ram sit for two weeks over the holidays and came back to a service 4WD light on initial start up. Turned out to be a shorted transfer case motor.
