What is an EGR code?

What is an EGR code?

EGR stands for “exhaust gas recirculation”. This OBD code basically means that the cars computer has tried to open the EGR valve, but it cannot get enough exhaust gas into the engine. EGR systems used to be controlled by engine vacuum via hoses and valves. Now most of them are controlled by electrical solenoids.

What to do if your engine has a p0401 code?

Your mechanic will also want to make sure that your EGR valve is receiving enough engine vacuum, particularly when the control solenoid opens on light-to-medium acceleration. Finally, your mechanic will remove your EGR temperature sensor and valve to check if there’s any carbon build-up or blockage of the EGR tubes.

What causes a computer to flag a p0401 code?

The computer will flag your P0401 code in the computer when it recognizes that there is not enough exhaust gas going back through the intake chamber… or simply, a low flow which causes the computer to flag the P0401 code. How does your computer know how much exhaust gas is being burned if any? Different manufacturers do it differently.
