What does a pinion bearing do?
A pinion bearing helps the smallest gears in the differential work efficiently. Differentials consist of a series of cogs and gears, and it is the smallest gears that enable one wheel to rotate faster than the other safely.
Why are my pinion bearings not working on my Silverado?
The oil seal behind the yolk wasn’t the right size, and neither one of the pinion bearings worked. They fit the pinion but did not fit the differential housing; the bearing and race OD were too small. Now on to the “How-To” with pictures: it will be as detailed as possible.

Mine checked out to be .015mm which is in the middle of the preferred .013-.018mm per the service manual. You can also check the pattern of the stock gears as well and take some pictures of that. Remember you will be replacing both the ring gear and pinion gear so this will not interfere with set up of the new gears, the marking compound that is.
