Is there a problem with my alternator and battery?

Is there a problem with my alternator and battery?

Check the two fusible links in picture they should have battery voltage both sides. The problem may be the PCM but lets run some tests first. Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know what you find.

What should the resistance be for an alternator?

If all this checks out then I suspect you have a wiring issue. I would perform either a voltage drop or resistance measurement of each of the wires from the PCM to the alternator. Also, through the fusible link from the battery to the alternator. You should have less then a half ohm of resistance.

How long will a car run without an alternator?

If your alternator fails, your battery doesn’t charge and eventually dies. How long will a car run without an alternator? If your alternator isn’t working, your car can barely do more than start before you begin losing power. At most, you should get around 5 to 10 minutes of driving before your car dies. How does an alternator and battery work together?

Anything less than that and your car isn’t even able to start. Both of these car parts control your electrical system. However, your alternator charges your battery while your battery supplies power to your car. The failures of a battery are sudden, while failures of a failing alternator are slow.

How can I tell if I have an alternator problem?

To differentiate an alternator problem from the battery, you will need to use a voltmeter to check for voltage. First, turn off the engine and check the battery voltage. A fully charged battery should have a reading of 12.65 volts. Next, turn on the engine and recheck the voltage. You should have a reading of 13.5 to 14.5 volts.

What should battery voltage be when alternator is not charging?

The alternator is connected to a set of belts which when loose can cause it not to function as required. To differentiate an alternator problem from the battery, you will need to use a voltmeter to check for voltage. First, turn off the engine and check the battery voltage. A fully charged battery should have a reading of 12.65 volts.

What happens when the alternator of a car is dead?

The alternator and the car’s battery work hand in hand. A good battery should give you service for the next five years before its lifespan ends. If your battery is dead, then it will not give power to the car’s alternator. The alternator normally lasts longer than the battery.

Why does the battery light stay on when the alternator is off?

The alternator is definitely charging the battery and does not drain overnight but the battery light continues to stay on. Before spending money to test the fusible links, please advise If the alternator will still charge the battery with a faulty or blown out fusible link? Thanks.

Yes the ground is fine going to the alternator, both battery terminals are cleaned on both ends. At the connector level at the alternator no residue, plug looked fine. On very first event 3 weeks ago, the very first sign of battery being lit up at higway speed, I had both battery terminals with green deposit.

When does an alternator need to charge the battery?

If the battery voltage is more than 13 volt, if the engine RPM is 2000 and if all the function is running smoothly, that means your alternator is pleasingly charging your car battery. Never make your car alternator culprit all time.

When to know if your alternator or battery is bad?

Using the process of elimination, find the culprit by bypassing the battery’s role and jump-starting your car. If the engine starts but dies immediately, your alternator probably isn’t keeping your battery charged. If a jump starts and keeps your car running, but the car can’t start again off of its own power, a dead battery is likely your answer.

What should I do if my alternator keeps dying?

The alternator is essentially a generator and it keeps your battery charged while supplying additional electrical power for the other systems in the vehicle. If you have a new alternator and your battery keeps dying on you, then there’s definitely a problem that you’re going to need to look into.

How long does an alternator last in a car?

Do not know what else to do.

Why does my alternator light go off when I raise the RPM?

Then if this light is going off when you raise the RPM then that means by spinning the alternator faster to increase the output puts the voltage over the minimum spec to turn the light off. If all this checks out then I suspect you have a wiring issue.

What does the battery light on the alternator mean?

This is the same connector that lets the on-board computer know if the alternator is charging or not, which is what the battery light actually means. You can use a volt meter to test what the battery is receiving by connecting it to the middle of the posts while the engine is running.
