It is very safe. We have a three year old. There are really shallow parts they can play in. Right above the shut-ins (the rock formations that impede the river) is a fairly shallow section of the river that they could play in.

When is the water turned on at Johnson Shut Ins?
Johnson Shut Ins is one of the best. The water is not turned on at the campsites until April 1 of each year. The campground hosts filled our tank from their site and gave us information about the park. Really good hosts!

Johnson’s Shut-ins is located in a very scenic area of the Ozarks and is one of my favorite places to visit. The park is extremely popular in the summer but doesn’t get too crowded since there is a maximum number of cars allowed in the day-use area at one time.
