How long does a special constable application take?
Once you have successfully passed the application process you will commence your special constable training. Again, this may vary between forces but typically this will take around 12 weeks.

The Special Constable Program works under the authority of the Police Act. Currently in Alberta, there are nearly 275 employers and 2,800 special constable appointments. Once approved, the employer must in turn apply for individuals to hold a special constable appointment.

What rank is a special constable?
There is no basis in law for ranks or grades for special constables. As such there is no equivalency of a regular police sergeant versus a special police sergeant for example. A special constable who is a higher rank or grade has no additional powers or opportunities in the same way as a regular officer.

Special constables generally wear identical uniforms to their regular colleagues. Some forces also issue special constables with a different hat badge from that of their regular counterparts although this is now extremely rare.

Special Constables do drive police cars at varying levels of competency to be able to respond to public needs, and to do so complete the same driving courses as regular police officers.
Can special constables drive on blue lights?
Special Constables are able to drive Police vehicles and regularly do so. However, additional training is required to be able to drive Police vehicles using blue lights and sirens, and such additional training is not routinely available to Special Constables.
Do you need a degree to be a special constable?
Yes, as above, the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA) does not require you to have a degree. You would need to meet the minimum entry requirements for the PCDA programme and pass the recruitment process set out by the City of London Police and Coventry University.
