the engine id/suffix number and part of vin is stamped on the front left hand side of the block right where the head meets the block there is a flat spot were it has beem milled and stamped. the cast code can tell you the appox year and engine size and somtimes where it was made.

They are basically the same. Chevy made both castings and used them pretty much interchangeably over the years. The 3970010 seems to have been made in much larger numbers than the 3970014. I thought the 3970010 had a higher nickel content… Myth or my failing memory? How much difference would that make if it’s true?

How to decode engine block 3970010 engine code?

Look on the right cylinder block in from of the head. There’s a machined surface and the engine codes should there if the block has not been milled. Should be 2 set of characters, one it the engine code and the other the VIN derivative. Look something like the following.
