Do you have to change lifters with a new cam?
Do you have to change lifters with a new cam?
When to Replace or Reuse Lifters New Flat Tappet Lifters are ALWAYS required for flat tappet cams. Used flat tappet lifters will have a wear pattern on the face. The wear pattern on the camshaft and lifters starts during the Break-In Procedure. This is one reason why following the break-in procedure is so critical.
Can you replace just one lifter?
No you do not have to replace all of the hydraulic valve lifters but I recommend that you do. You have to open up the engine just to get the single one out so might as well replace all of them while you’re at it.
Can valve lifters be reused?
They can be reused IF you do the proper technique of doing so, which is a figure 8 on a piece of sand paper to rebuild the crown of the lifter that promotes spinning so they don`t let the cam move and so a break in pattern can be achieved.
When to replace roller lifters and camshafts?
Wipe them out with a rag soaked in parts cleaner when you’re done. Note: If you’ve got flat-tapped lifters, you should replace the camshaft as well. You can generally get away with mixing new roller lifters and an old cam or vice versa, but flat-tappet cams and lifters establish matching wear patterns like the valvetrain.
What should I do if I replace my lifters only?
That is why you use break in oil and run a new cam in at a specific RPM for several min on the first startup. The lifters even have a slight dome to them so they rotate in the bore. New lifters may mate up with the old cam and wear in fine. Most times they will.
Can you mix and match roller lifters and cams?
You can generally get away with mixing new roller lifters and an old cam or vice versa, but flat-tappet cams and lifters establish matching wear patterns like the valvetrain. Mix old and new flat-tappet parts, and the entire assembly will wear out in fairly short order. Drop the new lifters in.
Is it required to change cam bearing every Cam change?
And yes the the cam bearings are the first things to get oil from the pump. But if they are too tight or too loose it will have a major effect on oil pressure down the line to more critically loaded parts of your engine such as the main bearings. Last edited by TWR2003; 06-20-2008 at 02:12 PM .
Do you need to replace the camshaft when replacing lifters?
Mostly old school..! The camshaft does not necessarily need to be replaced when replacing lifters, and often times is not. In the case of a 4 cylinder, especially, I would replace lifters without doing the camshaft since you can replace the lifters without removing the head.
When do the lifters wear on a cam?
Lifters spin on the cam lobes. Each lifter wears to each lobe. Most of wear occurs in the first 20 minutes of running. It sets a pattern just as a ring and pinion does. If you install lifters on wrong lobes they will try to set a wear pattern again and will usually fail.

Can a used lifter survive on a new cam lobe?
Running used lifters on a new cam is like using a second hand rubber when ya bang your ‘ole lady or girlfriend ! It ain’t gonna work long…. As mentioned, there are a lot of factors that determine whether a lifter will survive on a different cam lobe.
