Can Old gas cause sputtering?
How old is too old for gas? Gas that is older than a year can cause issues, like engine knocking, sputtering and clogged injectors. Bad gas can be drained from the tank to prevent damage to the engine.

The odd twist of this idle/hesitation problem (and probably the most important part of this issue) is that it clears up completely when I shift to neutral. If it’s in park, it idles horrible and stumbles bad when I try to rev it. Then I put it in neutral and she idles smooth at 625rpm, and will rev normally, with no stumble at all!

When you go to give it light throttle…it hesitates, surges and stumbles as it tries to get moving. If you give it a lot of throttle, it will push thru it and go.

Water can lead to corrosion of aluminum parts in the injector system though. Debris is another matter. Particles that plug the nozzles (or a float bowl and jets in a carburetor)
Can a tank of gas cause an engine to stall?
The past couple of times the engine has actually stalled as well. This is very short term. After this quick event it is then fine for the rest if the tank of gas. Any thoughts on what could cause this??

Why does my Car start right up after gas station?
Loosen the gas cap and retighten it, try starting the car again. If it has a problem then it’s most likely a bad fuel pump. If it starts right up then it was probably water in the gas, although I doubt NJ has been that cold yet to create that condition. BTW… do this test at home or better yet in your mechanic’s lot.
