Why is my Chevy Silverado not shifting gears?
The transmission is not shifting for the transmission speed sensor could have failed. This is the reason why when the throttle is let off and then the transmission shifts gear. The speed sensor is not communicating to the computer.
Why is the transmission not shifting out of first gear?
Speed control sensor less than 100.00 and simple to change. i have a 1990 c1500, it has this problem too. i let off the gas and when the rpms go back down it shift . it normally only happens going up hill also. any ideas? 1 people found this helpful. My previous post still applies.

It sounds like you have replaced TPS and VSS and verified those. At high engine RPM the transmission will wait to shift at a specified speed and adjust internal line pressures to put higher pressures to the clutches at high engine power output to prevent excessive slipping and burning of clutch material.
