Why does my Shimano grip shifter not shift?

Why does my Shimano grip shifter not shift?

At 1 and 2 I do feel a change and it is difficult to shift to those positions. It’s a shimano grip shifter. I’m following Park Tools “How to adjust a derailleur” but am hitting a problem shifting from 5 to 4. It doesn’t shift and no amount of rotations of the barrel adjuster seems to resolve.

What should I do if my shifter is not working?

You probably need to check that the shifter is working properly, then set up the derailleur. The problem might be that the cable head is not quite seated in the shifter. Disconnect the cable from the derailleur. Find a place to grab the cable where it is exposed – the downtube is usually a good spot.

How can you tell when a gear shift is done?

Tension the cable manually and work the shifter, you should feel it moving the cable for all gear shifts. If it’s hard to feel the cable moving, stick a ‘flag’ of tape on it and a marker of tape on the frame so you can see the relative movement.

Why does my shifter stick after a shift?

It is a plain steel on steel bearing which can become bone dry and will stick to the point of not returning the shifter to the rest position after a shift. The shifter needs to be removed every year or 2 and greased with a general purpose or moly grease.

How does the neutral switch work on a manual transmission car?

The neutral safety switch in a vehicle with a manual transmission is going to look a heck of a lot like a brake light switch. It works in the same fashion as the brake light switch. It will allow the vehicle to start in any gear, but it’ll only fire if the clutch is pressed in all of the way (even in neutral).

How often do you need to grease a shifter?

It is a plain steel on steel bearing which can become bone dry and will stick to the point of not returning the shifter to the rest position after a shift. The shifter needs to be removed every year or 2 and greased with a general purpose or moly grease. It’s not that hard to do and will make a world of difference.

How can I Make my shift shaft parallel?

Look at the shift shaft. A “dot” will be stamped on the end of it. The shift arm also has a “dot” stamped into it. Just match the dots to each other and you’ll be right on with factory assembly. Check the shift levers for parallel. If they aren’t, you can adjust the connecting rod to make it parallel.
