What causes an engine to shut off while driving?
Had a similar situation (just shut off while driving) on mine that turned out to be a broken wire to the crankshaft position sensor (CKP). Diagnosis started by pulling codes and finding a CKP code, so I would almost certainly start by pulling codes.
What causes a car to start but not keep running?
The engine requires the right amount of air and fuel to mix together for ignition. If there is a fuel leak somewhere, then the correct amount of fuel may not make it to the combustion chamber. This might be enough to allow the engine to start, but not keep running.
