Solenoid wire 0.02 volts in ‘on’ position, no change at ‘Start’ position. Assume starter not suspect for now. Confused as to which is starter relay. Inconclusive. Took off underscuttle to look for wiring loom adrift etc nothing, but noticed bent clips and grubby fingerprints, its been off more than once !

It is the only light in the owners manual cluster illustration that does not have a description. it is under the fuel and speed gauges and the mph needle points right at it when at rest. Anyway after a few tries, the car no longer starts at all.

High frequency noise at front end is normal at switch off. Your suggestion of 1,2 and 3 are roughly the correct steps to take, but better to do step 2 first. Dont forget to check the battery connections. Sounds as though battery isnt too good if it flattened so qickly.
