In a front wheel based AWD vehicle, the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) is attached to the side of the transmission where one of the half shafts connects, and transfers power to that half shaft and to a differential in the rear axle —in on-demand AWD— or to a central differential in full-time AWD.

Can you rebuild a PTU?

PTU’s have a tendency to overheat and fail. They cannot be rebuilt due to the damage that is done to them when they overheat. Transtar carries new OEM units from Ford. These items do not have a core charge and are COMPLETELY NEW UNITS.

When to replace the PTU and vent hose?

If odor is still present after the leak repair and cleaning, replace the PTU and vent hose, if equipped. For vehicles with no leaks and odor present, replace the PTU along with thePTU vent hose, if equipped. Refer to Section 7 of the SLTS manual for the appropriate labor operations.”

In theory it (the PTU) won’t last as long as it could with this thick broken down oil. It would be wise to set up an oil change interval for the PTU similar to the engine oil change maintenance.
