In a front wheel based AWD vehicle, the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) is attached to the side of the transmission where one of the half shafts connects, and transfers power to that half shaft and to a differential in the rear axle —in on-demand AWD— or to a central differential in full-time AWD.
Can you rebuild a PTU?
PTU’s have a tendency to overheat and fail. They cannot be rebuilt due to the damage that is done to them when they overheat. Transtar carries new OEM units from Ford. These items do not have a core charge and are COMPLETELY NEW UNITS.
Is PTU part of powertrain?
The PTU is part of the drivetrain and is covered the same as any part of the drivetrain during that warranty period. If it’s out of warranty, it’s out of warranty like anything else, not really rocket science!

The bearings inside the PTU create a pressure of air, which usually gets out by the vent. But the oil/paste blocked the vent and the leak was caused by the pressure forcing the oil to leak through the weakest point. Less than 150k miles and this happened. Most of the members that have the PTU, do a fill and suck method. It sounds like this is what you will be needing to do. The internal oil, when it overheats, it thickens up, then gets pushed out the top vent. Doesn’t mean it’s bad per`sae, but does need addressing.
Is it dangerous to replace my PTU unit?
There is no weird noise when driving but only the propane smell on idle. I guess the unit has to be replaced but can I continue to drive it until it makes bad noise or is it dangerous and urgent to replace the unit?

When to replace the PTU and vent hose?
If odor is still present after the leak repair and cleaning, replace the PTU and vent hose, if equipped. For vehicles with no leaks and odor present, replace the PTU along with thePTU vent hose, if equipped. Refer to Section 7 of the SLTS manual for the appropriate labor operations.”

The internal oil, when it overheats, it thickens up, then gets pushed out the top vent. Doesn’t mean it’s bad per`sae, but does need addressing. In theory it (the PTU) won’t last as long as it could with this thick broken down oil. It would be wise to set up an oil change interval for the PTU similar to the engine oil change maintenance.
