How does a rack and pinion steering system work?

Pump pressurizes fluid and sends it through the pump’s flow control valve to the pinion and valve on the rack and pinion assembly. See Fig. 1. Pinion and valve direct fluid to either side of the piston and rack, depending on turning direction of steering wheel. Piston and rack converts hydraulic pressure into linear force, reducing turning effort.

Why does a car need a hydraulic steering system?

The modern hydraulic steering system packs a load of power in a small package, and develops incredible pressures to do it. All cars are different, and require different pressures. Heavy vehicles and cars with very quick-ratio steering boxes typically require higher pressures than lighter and lower-performing vehicles.
