What to do if your thermostat is not working?
If your thermostat is not controlling temperature as is should be, and the display is functional, check it for the following issues: Low-voltage wire connections are loose or not positioned correctly. They should connect the heating unit to other components. If not, the unit will not work.
Is it bad to change the thermostat on a water heater?
It’s also not a bad idea to change the thermostats (even if they test good,) if you are changing the elements. In every water heater, there is a plastic dip tube that brings cold water to the bottom of the tank to be heated and prevents it from mixing with the already heated water at the top of the tank.
Why is my thermostat not turning on after I replace the transformer?
The actual power for signalling heat/cool, is supplied by a transformer in the furnace itself (the red R wire). If there is no power on the R wire, the thermostat has no way to call for heat/cool. In this case you’ll have to have an HVAC tech troubleshoot, and possibly replace the transformer.
Why does my reliance water heater not heat?
I have replaced both thermostats and elements in a Reliance water heater which checks out 120v at each screw in thermostats and each side of elements still will not heat. What else can I do? With your volt meter check the voltage at both terminal screws at the same time (screw to screw ) the voltage should be about 230 volts.
If the pins or the plug or damaged, you must replace the entire thermostat. It is almost impossible to repair this problem. If the power is there and the plug on the thermostat is not damaged, the thermostat is probably bad. There is one other option to try before tossing that thermostat in the trash.

Why does my thermostat not have a blue wire?
If your thermostat doesn’t have a blue wire, it usually means that the thermostat doesn’t need power from the HVAC system. If this is the case, your thermostat may need replacing. If this wire is connected and not broken, you may need to check the 24-volt transformer in your HVAC system.
