What kind of speedometer does a MGB use?
What kind of speedometer does a MGB use?
Chart listing the specifications of the different TPM speedometers fitted to the MGB. The variety of speedometers fitted to the MGB is a common source of confusion, especially in relation to the fairly common practise of swapping O/D and fully synchronized transmissions into MGBs that didn’t originally have them.
Why does my speedometer read too high or too low?
This will consequently cause the speedometer and odometer to read too high or too low, not an ideal situation. “Revs” in the table below referrs to the turns-per-mile (TPM) the speedo expects to receive from the transmission via the speedometer cable. The TPM of your speedo should be printed somewhere on the face, along with a serial number.
Where can I find a speedometer serial number?
The NAMGBR also has a cross reference table from car numbers to speedometer serial numbers by Orin Harding. [Ed. Note- this link seems to have gone MIA, so I’ve duplicated the table below.]
When did the Jaeger and Smiths speedometers come out?
Anthony Rhodes has produced a useful document ‘Repairing Jaeger and Smiths Speedometers’ as typically used in MGBs. This is the 2002 version (there is also a 2000), one source of which indicates there is a 2004 version in the pipeline.
What does it mean when your speedometer is not working?
If the oil pressure, coolant, charge, or gas gauge doesn’t work or works erratically, the problem is in the gauge, wiring, or sender. Speedometers are unique in that some of them use physical cables instead of sensors, so a speedometer not working can also indicate a broken cable or stripped gear.
What to do if your fuel gauge is not working?
Clean the clips with fine emery cloth and replace the fuse. If the fuse was ‘blown’, there is probably a fault in one of the circuits the fuse protects. Try to narrow the field by trying the horn, indicators etc until you find which blows the fuse. Fuel Gauge does not work. Probable cause is a faulty sender unit.
How are speedometers different from the other gauges?
While all gauges can be either analog or digital, speedometers are unique in that they can have either mechanical or electrical inputs. All other dash gauges are connected to sensors or sending units via wires, while your speedometer may utilize either a speed sensor or a physical cable.
How is the speedometer connected to the dash?
All other dash gauges are connected to sensors or sending units via wires, while your speedometer may utilize either a speed sensor or a physical cable. In vehicles that use cables, the speedometer is physically coupled to the transmission via a cable. The cable is usually square on both ends or square on one end and slotted on the other.
