In most cases the 305 used a wide hollow balancer about 6 inches tall, 350`s came with the solid 6 inch balancer or solid 8 inch balancer. All small block chevy generation 1 balancers are interchangeable anyways except the 400 small block and the vortec engines of 1996 and later.

Geezer. By far the easiest way would be to pull a head and measure the bore. A 350 will have a 4 inch bore ( as would a 327 or a 302) while a 305 will have a 3.736 in bore. The difference is very pronounced once you know what you are looking at .

A: Timing marks have changed during time. While most dampers have the mark 10 degrees BTDC (with a timing mark the same way, so it equals out, but you can see the mark past the water pump better) they came with 2°, 8° and 10° over the years (but I’m not sure about the years and exact numbers, just know they changed, could look it up somewhere).
Why is my 305 timing mark way off?
Also the outer ring of the balancer can move. If you look closely at it,it is two pieces of metal,with rubber sandwiched in between. If it gives way totally,well you can guess who’ll need a new hood,radiator,etc. Hank I got caught on that one—The timing mark for a 305 is in a different place than the timing mark for a 350.

The matching timing tab can be viewed from the front of the engine sticking out underneath the driver’s side “leg” of the water pump. Less common is a balancer with a TDC line that is 45″ CCW from the crank keyway.
