In general, the best clothing for rowing is soft, stretchy, breathable, and fairly form-fitting. One of the basic clothing requirements is Spandex shorts/trousers for wearing in the shell. Loose shorts can get caught in the slides under the moving seats, so avoid basketball style shorts, sweatpants, or warm-ups.
What do professional rowers wear?
A normal waterproof will suffice but a splash top is designed specifically for rowing. A technical top (or tech top) is rather like a tight t-shirt and will keep you warm and dry as they are generally made from breathable fabric. Often you will see rowers using this combination with an all in one.
What do you wear to sculling?
They need tight leggings (winter), tight shorts (summer) to avoid getting caught in the slide, a couple of tight fitting tops, a warm top, a hat and plenty of socks.
