What causes misfiring on a diesel engine?

What causes misfiring on a diesel engine?

Misfire is when the fuel air mixture in the cylinder fails to ignite. If that happens in a diesel engine, that means either the fuel/air mixture is wrong, injection timing is wrong, or the compression is too low. Things that can cause fuel/air mixture problems: Clogged or bad injectors.

Why does a Detroit Diesel runaway?

Diesel engine runaway occurs when a diesel engine ingests a hydrocarbon vapor, or flammable vapor, through the air intake system and uses it as an external fuel source. As the engine begins to run off these vapors, the governor will release less diesel fuel until, eventually, the vapors become its only fuel source.

Are there any problems with Detroit Diesel Series 60 engines?

Changing the SRS (Synchronous Reference Sensor) and TRS (Timing Reference Sensor) could also help with this issue. These two sensors should be replaced at the same time to maintain proper operation. This particular issue affects Series 60 engines built before 2002.

Are there any problems with the Detroit Diesel 14L?

Another common complaint, especially with the 14L, is poor fuel economy. As the engine got bigger and was designed for more horsepower, fuel usage seemed to increase as well. Some argue that this lowering of fuel economy is not due to engine design, but to poor operating practices.

Why does my Detroit Diesel engine keep failing?

For some reason, there was a defect in some of the wrist pins that led to the separating of the piston pin and crown. This separation allowed the connecting rod to disconnect as well, and one of the loose components would then damage the engine block, often by creating a hole through it.

Is it common for a diesel engine to misfire?

The good news is that engine misfires are a common occurrence and not a symptom of something more serious that is wrong with the diesel engine. Each engine is different and for example Mack E-7 or E-Tech engines have a thicker gauge fuel line than say a Detroit Series 60 or a CAT 3406E.

Why is the series 60 Detroit Diesel engine still running?

In a bid to save fuel, the engineers at Detroit designed the 60 to idle at very low speed. However, it took Detroit about 10 years to realize that the engine’s idle speed was not fast enough to operate the oil pump. As such, many older (pre-1997) engines have had lower engine bearings replaced more than once due to oil starvation.

Why does my Detroit Diesel engine not start?

While the 4-gauge wires the engine came with were sufficient from the factory, time can reduce the cable’s ability to transfer current to the starter. This lack of power leads to a no-start condition that closely mimics a dying battery, and can be recognized by battery cables that run much warmer while starting the truck than they should.
