What causes an engine to lope?
A compression leak may come from a cylinder head gasket and cause the engine to lope sometimes. This usually happens because the engine has high mileage, or a particular failure, like overheating, caused the gasket to blow. To check for a leaking head gasket, do a cylinder compression test using a vacuum gauge.
Why does my car lope at idle?

We finaly solved the problem for my Chevy Venture engine racing. We removed the throttle body to make sure that the gasket was not leaking and to make sure the idle sensor was sitting right. What we discovered was that the TPS (Throttle Postioning Sensor) needed to be replaced.

I have a 2002 Venture. A month or so ago, it died while my wife was using it. After a lot of messing around, I discovered the plug that goes through the floor behind the driver’s seat was bad. I replaced it, and all went well for a while. Then it died again, (Thankfully in the yard this time). Both times the fuel pump was not kicking on.

All of the 3.4 V6 in the Ventures make a metallic tapping sound when they first start which goes away in a few minutes. Its nothing to worry about, the lifters in these motors are pretty noisy at startup.
